Courtney Leigh - My Journey

The Making of a
Social Entrepreneur

Finding the juxtaposition of your mission
and your skillset

Like most people I struggle when it comes to writing about myself and what I am all about. The truth is that I am a walking anomaly so it's hard to pinpoint my style with all of my idiosyncrasies. A soundtrack of my life would span anything from Gangster rap to King George (Strait) and everything in between. I love Audrey Hepburn movies and British gangster thrillers, and am always up for degenerative comedy. I’ve been referred to as a laid-back perfectionist (a term I still don’t quite understand), and I have a passion for healthy, locally-sourced groceries but won’t back away from a gas station hot dog and a Redbull at any given moment. I like people more than I like animals, and social justice is my hobby.

I attribute my eclectic nature to my parents. In their regard, they are each a true representation of the different personality types that come from the baby boomers: my mom the regal but open, fun-loving, free spirit, and my dad the epitome of a conservative Texas country boy. The value this brings to my perspective is not lost on me, and I truly believe it has contributed to my emotional intelligence and empathetic nature. It has helped me to understand that no one shares my truth, and everyone is walking around with an entirely different set of experiences that help guide them on their path - every person brings something special to the mix, you just have to be willing to find it.

Education has been a major pillar of my journey, receiving my BBA in Marketing and Master’s in Organizational Leadership from St. Edward’s University and most recently an Executive Certificate in Corporate Social Responsibility from the Leeds School of Business. I have focused my studies on bridging the gap between business and society.

Professionally, I am a digital marketing and branding specialist, having thrived in every environment from small, local operations to large, global start-ups. I pride myself with my volunteerism and am currently the sitting Community Development Chair of the Young Women’s Alliance, have served as the co-chair of the board for the Capital of Texas of the National Alzheimer’s Association, and have spent many a Saturday at local non-profits with Generation Serve, introducing kiddos to the world of civic engagement.

My journey into marketing started at 15 years old, though I didn’t realize it at the time. I had started a community service club, I was obsessed with “business,” and I decided I was going to change the world. Fifteen years, two degrees, and a few (real) jobs later - I still love what I do and I still have the same goal, so I guess it’s pretty inherent in my personality.

I believe it is everyone’s responsibility to do their part in improving the communities we serve, especially businesses, and I will spend the rest of my life screaming my message from the mountain tops to anyone that will listen with the hope that the leaders among us will drive us towards a better tomorrow.
